FAQ for endos/diabetes doctors referring to BC Diabetes for Looping

How can I become a BCDiabetes-affiliated Loop site?

Shared care - BCDiabetes only does the Looping

When an endocrinologist or diabetes doctor refers a client to BC Diabetes just for Looping, the patient is quickly assessed to confirm their eligibility/suitability including that they have the necessary hardware. If deemed appropriate, BC Diabetes will continue with the installation and provide ongoing support to the patient for looping including updates to algorithms. General ongoing diabetes is left to the primary care team.

Do I need to configure or troubleshoot my patient's Loop system?

BC Diabetes provides our looping patients with ongoing support. Checkups begin as daily appointments subsequent to loop installation, before being gradually spaced into bimonthly, monthly, 3 months and eventually every 6-12 months based on the client's needs.  Clients can receive help between scheduled appointments by calling our staff during office hours, or navigating to our online staff monitored support group.

The client's primary care team is not expected to provide support with the patient's loop configuration. We ask kindly that patient queries are referred to our staff for help.  Referring endos & diabetes docs are encouraged to learn how to adjust Loop settings - see Configuration section of this site, and are invited to visit BCDiabetes to see us in action.

How are Loop candidates selected?

We administer a questionnaire to screen our incoming loop patients for tech savviness, insulin adjustment knowledge, previous medical history, and levels of anxiety. See our questionnaire.

Can my patient stop Looping?

Patients can stop Looping by performing a simple pod change using the Omnipod PDM. The patient can also return to MDI if they desire.
